Still Wakes the Deep

Narrative Horror·The Chinese Room·2024

Still Wakes the Deep is a cinematic first-person horror game set aboard an isolated North Sea oil rig in the 1970s, where a catastrophic drilling accident unleashes something terrifying from beneath the ocean. Cut off from escape and surrounded by collapsing machinery, raging seas, and an unknown presence, players must navigate the rig’s flooded corridors and industrial maze in a desperate fight for survival.

About the ScoreEmotional Depth and Fear of the Uknown

Jason built the score for Still Wakes the Deep around a custom metal instrument called “The Rig” - an oil-rig-shaped sound structure designed by Matt McConnell to create the score’s unearthly metallic groans, scrapes, and resonances. He combined that with Moog Model D synthesizer for additional low-end dread and 70's atmosphere.

The soundtrack also uses a closely recorded string quartet, Allan Hon (cello) and Eli Bishop (violin and viola), for the more intimate, emotional material concerning Caz’s family and friends, along with Kristin Naigus (woodwinds). Jason described a recurring four-note motif that appears throughout the score in different registers and speeds.

A great soundtrack from Jason Graves. Like the monster, Graves’ score is noticeably human, yet obviously corrupted.

PressWhat critics said

The ominous music created by Jason Graves is almost unbearable at times. It's one heck of an experience.

Cinelinx

Graves has an impressive body of work attached to his name, and with Still Wakes the Deep he can add another terrific job to that list. The music is easily my favorite part. The way Graves captures horror, suspense, and isolation with his score is both remarkable and haunting.

Sight-In Games

Jason Graves' symphonic score does a great job of capturing the inherent contrast between surreal beauty & abject horror.
