“If you play video games, chances are you’ve heard the music of Jason Graves–he’s composed the soundtracks for Far Cry Primal, 2013’s Tomb Raider, Dead Space, and Until Dawn. On this week’s episode, the Dead Air crew sits down to dissect how Graves finds signature sounds in the real world, and how he uses them to create unsettling atmospheres.” Listen to the podcast.
“Jason Graves talks in this interview about his work in the video game Far Cry: Primal – a score with primitive sonorities in which he has been responsible for almost all the instruments we hear in the score.” Read the complete interview.
“As games become more and more immersive with photorealistic graphics and compelling storylines, high production quality demands a great music score. This is where my guest Jason Graves comes in. For his work on Far Cry Primal, a game set in the stone age, Jason created an entirely organic score, blending sounds created from natural materials, such as wood, bushes, bones, antlers, clay pots, as well as a ram’s horn, wooden flutes, female vocals, and an instrument called an Aztec Death Whistle.” Listen to the full interview.
Jason’s interactive score to Ubisoft’s Far Cry: Primal was featured as the first of four scores for Post Magazine’s March cover story, “Fight Song – Composing Winning Score for Games.”
“Far Cry Primal, from Ubisoft, takes us back in time. Waaaaaay back! To 10,000 BCE, in fact. Composing the music created a unique challenge for Jason Graves, who assembled a Stone Age “shopping list” of bones, rocks, antlers and rattles to create a score that’s as visceral as the game. I talked with Jason about how he unleashed his inner caveman.” WSHU Interview
“In this exclusive SoundWorks Collection video profile we feature composer Jason Graves, who created an emotionally provocative soundtrack made out of wood, bones, rocks and sweat.” Watch the video.
“Get ready for an emotionally provocative soundtrack made out of wood, bones, rocks and sweat – this is what a mammoth rushing at you would sound like! Jason’s music will put you in that visceral zone, leaving no choice but to survive and fight!” – Simon Landry, Music Supervisor, Ubisoft Purchase on iTunes here.
Ubisoft has released an official track from Far Cry Primal on their YouTube channel. The final soundtrack will contain two hours of original music. Listen to “The Heart of Oros” here.
“Bamboo. Plants. Clay plots. Gravel. These might seem like odd choices for instruments under normal circumstances, but for Far Cry Primal’s BAFTA-Award winning composer, they were perfect. Jason Graves reached deep into humanity’s musical past to craft a soundtrack that would enhance the experience of playing through Primal’s Stone Age setting.” Read the complete article here.
